132 goals scored in the Division one league By Jeremiah Sawyerr A total of one hundred and thirty-two (132) goals were scored by the 14 clubs that took part in the just concluded Western Area Football Association (WAFA) sponsored Division One League, KES can authoritatively reveal. According to the statistics that was released by the WAFA secretariat, the sum total of 132 goals were scored by all the clubs after 13 matches played by each. The data released by the secretariat indicates that Kissy All Stars emerged as the club with the highest goal in favor with 13 goals. Although Kissy All Stars got the highest goals in favor, they conceded 7 goals and slipped beneath the first four clubs that earned qualification into the play-off stage. The Stars statistics also show that the club won 5, drew 5, lost 3 matches and grabbed 20 points which left them in fifth position at the end of season. Three clubs- league champions, Belvic United, Regent-Olympics and Goderich United- emerged second with the highest goals in favor, each accounting for 11 goals but differ sharply on goals against. League champions Belvic United got an impressive 2 goals against, recorded 7 victories, drew 5, lost 1 match and ended the league with 26 points to claim the championship. Regent Olympic, despite securing 11th goals in favor, got an abysmal 12 goals against. They won 3 matches, drew 7 and lost 3 to grab 15 points to end the league. Goderich United also have an impressive 11 goals in favor, 2 goals against; recorded 5 wins, 4 draws and lost 3 matches to land sixth position on the table with 17 points. WAFA’s statistics further show that the two relegated sides, Easton Rangers and Sunday United, failed to make an impact in the league, especially the latter. The statistics indicate that Sunday United did not win a match, drew 4 and lost 9 divisional league matches. Sunday United clinched 4 goals in favor and 21 goals against which left them at the bottom of the table with 4 points at the conclusion of the league. Easton Rangers on the other hand, won 1, draw 6 and lost 6 matches to end the league in 13th position with 9 points. However, remaining data also show that the first four finalists for the play-off matches will lock horns with the other regional champions. Secretary General of WAFA, Abu Manly, said the association is delighted with the number of goals scored throughout the competition. He said the 132 goals indicate that the clubs have improved within the past year. Manly disclosed that the number of goals are growing higher and higher as each season comes. “In the next Division One League season, WAFA will certainly witness another increase in the number of goals scored as the youngsters are desperate to take their career into another level,” said Abu Manly. |
