Guinness Community league final…

Central community wins the trophy & Wellington takes third place

By Abubakarr Kamara

In what could be described as a very competitive league, the 2nd edition of the Guinness Community league organised by the Sierra Leone Brewery Limited ended last Saturday with Central one Community emerging as champions at the expense of Wilberforce community.

The final was played at the National Stadium and was very competitive as both teams played tirelessly to convert the prestigious Guinness trophy. The match ended 2-1 in favour of Central one community.

Both teams started the match with determination and each had several opportunities wasted which either was due to lack of experience or inability to play on a grass pitch.

However, Central community’s Brima Mansaray opened the score line in the 28th minutes after a defensive blunder on the 18 yard box of Wilberforce community. Brima skilfully took the ball, made a U-turn and brilliantly swayed the ball at the right angle of the post.

Sahr Tengbeh increased the scores few minutes later after a one-two pass with midfielder Sanusie. Sahr beautifully volleyed the ball over the Wilberforce goal keeper’s head to make it 2-0 before the break.

In the second half, Wilberforce came in more determined than the first and could have reduced the score line in the first five minutes and even got the equaliser before the first 15 minutes but wasted their opportunities carelessly, Wilberforce had several one on one chances but goalkeeper Lamin Bangura denied them on several occasions. In the 80th minutes, Wilberforce reduced the goal margin from the spot after goal keeper Lamin Bangura was cautioned for a foul on substitute Alieu Bangura in the 6 yard box. Midfielder, Mohamed Mansaray converted the penalty and only goal for Wilberforce.

In the 89th minute, Central could have made it three but were denied by the Wilberforce Central defender who made a brilliant cut-off in the 6 yard box.

In the third place played on Friday at the Fourah Bay field, Oxley Street, defending champion, Wellington Community put up a very good performance to clinch the third place trophy from the broken hearted Fourah Bay Community.

Speaking before the kick-off, Sierra Leone Brewery Limited (SLBL) Manager, Dr John Mbonu said the competition was intended to identify and nurture young talents in the country adding that the company intends to be the highest spenders in not only Sierra Leone’s football but also World football in general.
